Ann D. asked:

I’m trying to come up with my “big gift” for my niece; any suggestions? I want it to be really special. It has to be useful too, but I’m more concerned about special :) Thanks!

Make a diaper cake!!!!! Ive’ seen it done and it looks amazing. Just tie a bunch of diapers together to look like a layered cake with ribbons and stuff and it will be the best, unique gift ever!

Jo is right. Having diapers delivered to your door, prepaid for a year???? That would have been the cat’s pajamas.

my mom bought this giant toy box for my cousin. she filled it with all the everyday things that no one else thought of (especially since most people go off a registry) like diapers, teething rings, formula, bottles, bibs, onesies. my cousin adored it! she loved that she didn’t have to worry about getting all the little things right away because she had a stock of them and they used the toy box for years.

I’m going to have a little girl this fall and the best gift I could receive for her would be for some one to start a college fund for her. Another thing would be diapers for the first year of her life.

I’m pregnant right now, my baby isn’t coming until December, and already he/she has too much clothes!
So try to get something else useful. Baby manicure set, picture frames, bibs, keepsake boxes or a baby book.
Ask the mom to be to get back to you with suggestions, its hard to be put on the spot but after a day to think about it I bet she can give you a whole list you can pick from.

Bath stuff is often neglected! Get a plastic tub or a basket and fill it with washcloths, lotions, soft towels and baby wash.

And diapers/wipes are always needed and expensive to keep up with, so considering getting those as part of the gift.

    I am with JM’s answer….
Even parents forget thins like Gas drops, diaper creams, and things for as they grow. Its nice to have Tylenol and Motrin available in the middle of the night. Vicks vapor bath.
Onesies because OOPS shes too big for 0-3 and 3-6m.
Diapers are always good. Wipes too.
    Toys for 0-12 months.
Add a gift certificate to get pictures done too.

Help her parents keep a scrapbook full of pictures until she graduates high school. Or you could offer to help with babysitting whenever they need you. Just being there for the rest of her life and helping her and her parents is the best gift you can give them.

My aunt made my daughter a wish tree. She bought a pink prelit tree at big lots and went to the dollar store and bought a ton of little toys to attach to it. She also found little clear boxes so she put 60 dollars all over it in 5 dollar bills. You could take the concept and change it a bit, putting infant nail clippers, thermometer, nasal syringe, rattles, small toys, medicines, small bottles, even clothes and onesies rolled up and tied with a ribbon. Even coupons and a gift card will come in handy. She can reuse the tree and use all the stuff for baby.

Other things I wish I had gotten at my baby shower were:
    More clothes
    Bottles
    a diaper bag
a crib that turns into a toddler bed and the rails to change it
    a boppy
    bouncer seat

The things I can’t live without?
    A bottle drying rack
her sing n dance stage with a big mirror
    a digital camera

    Good luck!

I agree with the diapers! The most special gift I received was a basket full of little things you will need and forget to buy such as bottle brushes, tylenol, mylicon etc. You can never go wrong with any of these! She also gave me cute clothes as well.

Depending on where she’s getting her furniture, this may be over your budget, but my parents splurged for their first expectant grandchild and bought us all our nursery furniture. I honestly couldn’t think of anything I’d want more….the year of diapers are a wonderful idea though, but it may be a little more difficult logistically – unless you just hand over money. My best friend’s godfather bought her the baby’s crib and it was beautiful practical gift as well. oh another thing that would make a great gift is to hire a photo session or two with a photographer…they could document her pregnancy, the birth of the baby and the first few months, then have them make a beautiful album. My wedding photographer does this and I’ve been considering it for my first born. my photographer’s package is a little pricey, so receiving it as a gift would be awesome!

The best baby gift is a gift for Mom. A happy mom makes a happy baby. Give her a spa day and offer to take care of the baby while she goes and gets pampered.

After being bloated and huge with swollen ankles and back pain, plus enduring hours of pain then pushing out a 7-8 lb baby, she is already tired. Then the hospital sends her home to wake up 3 or 4 times a night to feed the baby, change the baby, calm the baby down, etc.; the most appreciated gift would be a day where Mom is the center of attention.

Give Mom a day (especially is she has other children to take care of in th process of caring for a newbon) free of dirty diapers, screaming, bottle-making, burp clothes, spit-up, basically worry-free. Let her relax and get pampered.

As a mom to four I would have loved that. Coming home after a relaxing day at the spa, given a chance to recharge my battery would have given me a renewed sense of myself and calmed me down. A calm and happy woman is more patient, kinder, happier mom, which in turn helps the baby as well.

I hope I helped. Good luck.

What little girl couldn’t use a “money tree”? I know I wish I had one! Yeah, I know that’s impossible…
but we can dream, can’t we?

The other posters all had really good practical ideas, but I’m getting that you want to give something that will stand out from the rest of the gifts without completely emptying the bank account so I’m going to go with a piece of personalized baby jewelry. Nothing is as special to a little girl as her first bracelet or necklace with her name engraved on it. You could include a bib and a onesie in a basket with a bow along with the silver bracelet for a very reasonable price.

The best present I think that I ever gave someone as a shower gift was ready made dinners. I got a call every other day thanking me. In our town we have a place where you pay a fee & with a group of other people go around making different dinners, lots of casseroles and other types that take almost no time to prepare…I can’t remember the place that I went to.
